Under the picturesque skies of Japan, the 12th race of the season played out, weaving a tale of anticipation, camaraderie, and unexpected twists for Red Bull Racing. With the sun casting its golden glow over the iconic circuit, the dynamic duo of Kruimel and The Captain aimed to rewrite the narrative, seeking the elusive 1-2 finish that had eluded them in recent races. Little did they know, the weekend would unfold into a captivating saga of challenges, fierce battles, and the sweet taste of victory.
Training Drama
The weekend kicked off with challenges for The Captain, who experienced a crash in the first timed lap of the first practice session. Having not won a race since the summer break and finishing only one of the last three races, The Captain faced mounting pressure. Meanwhile, Kruimel, successfully completing his training program, seemed to face a more promising start.
However, redemption for Red Bull came in the second practice session as both drivers not only successfully executed their programs but also posted competitive lap times. It was a glimpse of the potential that the Red Bull duo had in store.
Qualification’s Unraveling
As the team approached the critical qualification session, hopes were high but the familiar pattern from recent races reappeared. Kruimel managed to secure an excellent time, earning him the second position. In contrast, The Captain struggled to piece together a solid lap, settling for the fifth position on the grid.
The grid, reshuffled due to penalties, saw Kruimel starting from pole position, while The Captain moved up to fourth. The stage was set for a race that could either reaffirm the strength of Red Bull or further fuel the growing criticisms.

Race Day Chronicles
As the lights went out on the sunny Suzuka Circuit, Kruimel showcased a stellar start, fending off challenges from competitors and maintaining his lead. The Captain, starting from fourth, faced an early setback, conceding a position to Leclerc in the opening laps.
However, a determined Captain clawed his way back, overtaking Leclerc and setting his sights on the top three. Just as it seemed the Red Bull drivers were finding their rhythm, a mistake by The Captain in the fourth lap saw him go wide, briefly ending up in the gravel. This blunder allowed Leclerc to regain the fourth position, and despite The Captain’s subsequent efforts, he couldn’t reclaim the spot.
At the front, Kruimel, leading the race, encountered stiff competition as Sainz aggressively defended his position. This tussle allowed The Captain to close the gap. However, a fierce battle with Sainz resulted in significant damage to The Captain’s front wing.
Strategic Pit Stops
Kruimel, facing his own challenges with aggressive defending from Sainz, opted for an early pit stop after the seventh lap, switching to medium tires. Unfortunately, he found himself in traffic, losing valuable time to the top four. Sensing an opportunity, The Captain, stuck behind Leclerc, made a strategic decision to pit a lap later, hoping to benefit from the over-cut strategy.
As the pit stops unfolded, it became apparent that the over-cut worked well for The Captain. Sainz, now on fresh tires, emerged as the race leader, while Kruimel, despite his earlier pit stop, managed to rejoin the race close behind.
Late-Race Drama
In a daring move, Kruimel attempted to overtake Sainz for the lead in the sixteenth lap. The ensuing defensive maneuvers from Sainz resulted in damage to Kruimel’s wing. Despite this setback, Kruimel held on to the lead, creating a bottleneck that allowed The Captain to join the fray.
In the 18th lap, The Captain executed a daring overtaking maneuver on the inside of the hairpin turn against Carlos Sainz. Similar to Kruimel’s experience, Sainz defended aggressively, resulting in significant damage to The Captain’s front wing. Although Sainz managed to reclaim the position in turn 13, The Captain, displaying remarkable overspeed, appeared poised to pass Sainz on the outside in turn 14. However, Sainz forcefully squeezed The Captain almost off the track, causing further damage to his wing.
Navigating through the chicane, The Captain still managed to overtake Sainz in their intense battle for second place. Unfortunately, the struggle took its toll on The Captain’s compromised Red Bull, especially in the challenging S-turns. Pourchaire surged ahead, followed by LeClerc, and The Captain had to concede positions. In the final lap, even a resurgent Sainz managed to overtake The Captain.
With damaged aerodynamics hindering any defense, The Captain valiantly held onto the fifth position. Kruimel, despite his own damages, extended his lead in the last lap, securing his third victory since joining Red Bull after the winter break. Pourchaire claimed second place, LeClerc settled for third, and The Captain finished in fifth. The 6th position went to Dennis Hauger, making it a challenging weekend for Mercedes as well. Notably, The Captain earned an extra point for achieving the fastest lap in the race.

Post-Race Reflections
The Captain: Expressing frustration, “It’s just not falling into place this weekend. We could have had a 1-2, but when everything is set up against you, you just lose it. This cost me 8 points, and we, as a team, really needed those. It’s tough for me to find anything positive at the moment, even though it’s the first time Kruimel and I both finished in the points.”
Kruimel: Acknowledging the team’s eagerness, “The race wasn’t bad at all for both of us. It could have been a 1-2, but we almost messed it up because we’re just too eager. Luckily, I managed to maintain the lead despite the damage, but The Captain just wants it too much, resulting in unnecessary mistakes. It’s bitter for us as a team. I came to Red Bull to achieve 1-2 finishes, and now, even with my third win, I still don’t see a teammate on the podium. That’s a real problem because the car can handle it.”
Championship Standings
In the championship standings, Kruimel strengthened his position at the top with 179 points, while The Captain, with 162 points, faced a widening gap to the leader. Norris, Hamilton, and others maintained their positions, setting the stage for an intense championship battle.

Constructors’ Battle
Red Bull maintained its lead in the constructors’ standings with 330 points, followed by Mercedes with 283. Ferrari’s strong showing elevated them to third place, emphasizing the growing competition for team supremacy.
