The 16th round of the Formula 1 season unfolded at Monza, the Temple of Speed, where fans witnessed another thrilling chapter in the ongoing rivalry between Dutch stars Kruimel and The Captain. The race weekend provided plenty of drama, from a fiercely competitive qualifying session to a race filled with overtakes and strategic battles. Here’s how it all went down.
Qualifying Drama: Kruimel and The Captain’s Struggles
Qualifying at Monza was packed with tension and surprises. In the first run of Qualifying, The Captain’s attempt at a quick lap was thwarted when he got held up by a Ferrari, forcing him to abandon his lap. His second attempt was only marginally better, leaving him sitting at a provisional P15. The Captain’s Williams teammate, Albon, surprised everyone by placing his car in P4, showing Williams’ newfound pace.
Kruimel, driving for Aston Martin, faced his own struggles. While quick in the initial run, he found himself behind his teammate Alonso and a Ferrari. In the closing stages, Kruimel went for two timed laps but couldn’t improve on his P2 time after facing traffic. Meanwhile, Alonso stormed to pole, with Ferrari’s Leclerc edging Kruimel to push him back to P3.
For the first time in five races, Kruimel found himself off the front row, while The Captain prepared for a challenging race starting from P12.
Race Start: Kruimel Moves Forward, The Captain’s Climb Begins
As the lights went out, Leclerc launched from P2 and took the lead heading into Turn 1, diving past Alonso. This opened the door for Kruimel to attempt a move on the outside of Alonso in the first chicane, a daring maneuver that saw light contact but allowed him to secure P2.
The Captain, meanwhile, had a slower start, losing a position after being forced to avoid contact with McLaren’s Norris. But he quickly regrouped, recovering to P11 with a brilliant divebomb into Turn 4 that saw him overtake both Hulkenberg and Norris in one swoop. By the end of the first lap, The Captain had set his sights on Russell, whom he passed heading into Parabolica.

Kruimel Takes the Lead, The Captain Fights Through the Pack
In the second lap, Kruimel wasted no time hunting down Leclerc. He lined up the Ferrari for an overtake heading into Turn 1, holding the inside line and perfectly navigating through the chicane to take the lead. Behind him, Alonso kept the pressure on Leclerc, but the top three quickly began to pull away from the rest of the field.
The Captain’s charge through the pack continued. A well-timed move saw him take advantage of Perez’s attempt to pass Piastri, slipping through to claim P7. By the end of lap 3, he had reeled in the cars ahead and closed in on Sainz and Verstappen, who were being held up by Albon’s impressive Williams.

In a daring move on lap 5, The Captain lunged past Sainz in Ascari, though he overshot the corner and had to give the positions back. Undeterred, he retook both spots the following lap, slotting into P4 behind the leading trio of Kruimel, Leclerc, and Alonso.
Pit Stop Strategies: The Undercut Pays Off for Kruimel
By lap 9, Kruimel had built a commanding lead, stretching the gap to over three seconds. He pitted early, along with Leclerc, but the Ferrari driver found himself stuck behind slower traffic, allowing Kruimel to extend his advantage after a clean stop. Alonso stayed out longer but lost time to The Captain, who executed a perfect in-lap and pit stop.
As Alonso rejoined, he found The Captain breathing down his neck. The Dutchman, fueled by a phenomenal in-lap, quickly closed the gap and positioned himself for an attack.
The Captain’s Battle with Alonso, Kruimel’s Cruise to Victory
With Kruimel in control of the race and pulling away at the front, the real battle was for second. The Captain hounded Alonso for several laps, launching multiple attacks. At the start of lap 12, The Captain made his move, using DRS to pass Alonso down the main straight. Alonso, defending aggressively, compromised his own line, allowing The Captain to sweep through and take P2.
However, the battle wasn’t over. Alonso fought back, making several attempts to retake the position. A close call came on lap 16 when the two drivers made slight contact through Ascari, but The Captain held firm. The scrap between Alonso and Leclerc behind allowed The Captain to finally break free and build a small gap.

A Double Dutch Podium: Kruimel Wins Again, The Captain Shines
Kruimel’s lead grew to over 10 seconds as he cruised to his 11th victory of the season, displaying his usual dominance and race craft. The Captain crossed the line in second, his sixth podium of the season, after withstanding immense pressure from Alonso and Leclerc.
Alonso eventually won the fight for the final podium spot, beating Leclerc to third place.

Championship Standings: Kruimel Extends Lead, The Captain Closes In
Kruimel’s victory in Monza saw him extend his championship lead to 89 points, inching closer to securing the title in his debut season. The Captain’s second-place finish propelled him to fourth in the standings, surpassing both Norris and Perez. Aston Martin’s stranglehold on the Constructors’ Championship grew stronger as they pulled 161 points clear of Red Bull.

For Kruimel and The Captain, the Italian Grand Prix was another showcase of their immense talent. As the season heads into its final stretch, Kruimel appears unstoppable, but The Captain’s relentless fight from the back continues to capture the imagination of fans worldwide.
Monza will be remembered as yet another step in their thrilling journeys through Formula 1, but also as a race that hinted at what The Captain could achieve with a more competitive car.
